Welcome to Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences

Our Department in Speech and Hearing Sciences is one of the strongest in the Northwest, providing students with excellent preparation for careers in audiology and speech-language pathology. It is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

We currently offer an undergraduate degree in Speech & Hearing Sciences and a Masters degree in Speech-language Pathology. The Masters degree emphasis in Audiology has been suspended due to the fact that the American Speech-Language Hearing Association is changing the entry level of the profession from a Masters degree to a Doctorate.

The program is staffed by eight full-time faculty and over 25 adjunct faculty. The latter hold positions in institutions such as the Oregon Health Sciences University, Good Samaritan Hospital, the Portland V.A. specialized courses and supervise student research and clinical practica.

The urban location of Portland State University allows a diverse array of off-campus practicum settings for students in the Speech and Hearing Sciences Program. Practicum placements are available in four hospitals, a medical school, hearing and speech centers, a child development and rehabilitation center, and infant hearing program, centers for multiply and severely disabled individuals, numerous public and private schools, and several private practices. Some of these institutions offer stipends to students and provide research opportunities.

The Speech and Hearing Sciences Program is accredited through the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and by the Teachers Standards and Practices Commission of the Oregon Department of Education. Portland State University is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The Teacher Education Program holds accreditation through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

American Sign Language (ASL) - ASL I , II & III is now being offered in place of SPHR 389 Sign Language: Theory & Practice. Undergraduate majors in Speech & Hearing Sciences are now required to take ASL I & II unless graduating under a catalog older than 2007-08.
